PackTailgater.com - Fans' Guide to NC State Wolfpack Tailgating!
Let the Tailgating Begin!
Written by MO
Thursday, 01 September 2005

Ahhh, that most wonderful time of the year has come again!  It's time for Wolfpack Football Tailgating!

TAILGATR License PlateThe folks here at packtailgater.com are stoked about this season.  We've been diligently planning our first tailgate of the season for Sunday, September 4th versus the Hokies from Virginia Tech.  Just a few short months ago, the tailgating season seemed to be forever and a day away, with our kickoff countdown (see top right of the main page) numbering in the triple digit days.  As the numbers got lower, time seemed to accelerate in the process, bringing our tailgate planning to a feverish pitch.  So, are you ready or what?!?

We've got a ton of great things planned for packtailgater.com this season.  Read on to learn about them.

Pop the Cap Update
Written by Michael Klett
Saturday, 09 July 2005

(Updated July 19th with new info on how you can help)

Pop the Cap needs your help!! Pop the Cap is an organization whose goal is to allow more craft-style, high-end beers to be bought and sold in NC by raising the beer ABV cap from its current level of 6%. Their proposed legislation, which raises the limit to a more reasonable 15% ABV, passed the NC house with flying colors, but it has hit a snag in the Senate. It seems that a handful of Senators are painting a doomsday scenario that all beer will become "more dangerous" because the amount of alcohol will increase in beer "by 250%". This is not what will happen. Bud Light (4.2% ABV) will still be Bud Light. You will now just have the choice of also buying German Bocks, Imperial Stouts, Belgian Dubbels and Tripels, or a host of others. These are expensive, unique beers that do not appeal to minors or those looking for a cheap, "quick buzz"... that task can be left to the likes of Mad Dog 20/20 and Boone's Farm (which are fortified wine and therefore, need not adhere to the cap applied to beer... even though they are sold right along beside beer).

If you are like me and feel that you deserve a choice in NC, please please please take a few moments to take some action. The bill has been pushed to committee, and it needs to get back on the Senate floor. We have enough votes in the Senate to get it passed, it just needs to get there. Did I mention that NC is one of only 6 states with a low limit like this one?

Information on how you can become a part of history and help get this law changed can be found here: http://www.popthecap.org/news/kerr/

NC Beer Lovers, Read This

Edit (7/7/05)There is no longer a need to write letters in support of this cause... the bill goes before the Senate for a vote today!  Pop the Cap is optimistic that they have the votes necessary for passage of this bill.  The remainder of the story is maintained below for "historic" purposes.

Beer lovers of North Carolina, its time to act!  Did you know that North Carolina is one of only 6 states in our country that limits the Alcohol By Volume in beer to 6%?  That means that the majority of the other states have a MUCH wider selection of beer and beer styles available to them.

The 6% ABV limit on beer was put into place in 1935 (at the same time that NC repealed Prohibition) because mill owners were afraid that their workers wouldn't show up for work on Monday. Pop the Cap is a grassroots, citizen-driven movement solely committed to lifting this artificial limit.

This legislation has already passed in the House of Representatives.  It did so largely because of the wide-scale support from letter writing citizens.  It will be introduced in the Senate as soon as there is enough support.  At this point, there are too many "undecided" Senators for Pop the Cap to proceed.  This legislation needs your support NOW!

Please visit Pop the Cap and learn how you can make a difference by writing to senators.  All it takes is a few minutes of your time.  They have excel templates, sample letters, and instructions on performing a "mail merge" so you can generate letters to each senator in a very small amount of time.  All they ask is that you support the legislation as it is written (lifting the cap to 15%, with all beers above 6% requiring a label stating the ABV content).  It is also great if you state why you are interested in seeing this law repealed.  Good reasons are having wider choice, giving more options to brewers and restaurants, and eliminating the need to go out of state to get quality beers.  A bad reason would be "to get drunker faster".  That doesn't help the cause, and is not the spirit of this movement.  There are already cheap hard liquors for you if that is your goal.

The changing of this law is very close, but it is not guaranteed.  Take a moment today to be a part of history!

The rumor is that MTSU Blue Raiders have agreed to face NC State at Carter Finely on November the 19th.  Life Time Rights owners will be given the option of purchasing the tickets first, then the tickets will be opened up to the general public.

This is the end results of the Temple saga.  Good luck in the MAC.
